What is the GBIS Grant?

GBIS stands for the Great British Insulation Scheme which is a government scheme focussing on energy efficiency, this was formerly known as ECO+. Administering this scheme is Ofgem who are the Office of Gas & Electricity Markets, working to deliver greener, fairer energy systems. The scheme is designed to offer improvements to the least energy-efficient homes in Great Britain. Alongside this it aims to tackle fuel poverty and help reduce energy bills.

This scheme works alongside and complements the Energy Company Obligation
Scheme (ECO4). However, there are some differences, unlike ECO4, GBIS will mostly deliver single insulation measures.

Whilst supporting low-income and vulnerable households, GBIS is also available to those living in homes with an EPC (Energy Performance Certificate) rating of D-G, and households within Council Tax Bands A-D in England and A-E in Scotland and Wales.

How the scheme works is that it places an obligation on medium and large energy companies. This is to deliver measures that ultimately result in reduced energy usage. It is currently intended to run from April 2023 to March 2026.

Who Is Eligible for GBIS?

In order to qualify for the Great British Insulation Scheme and reduce your homes energy bills, you must meet the following criteria:

Have an energy performance certificate (EPC) of D-G

Live in a Council Tax band of A-D in England, or D-G in Scotland and Wales.

The GBIS is available whether you be a homeowner, landlord, or tenant (either renting through a housing association or privately). If you are a tenant, there must be permission from the landlord before you apply and written permission for it to be installed.

This scheme is not available in Northern Ireland.

Why You Should Apply For The Scheme?

The GBIS offers a multitude of benefits all with the aim of producing a greener, fairer energy system. Some of these benefits include:

Energy Efficiency
Insulating your home can improve energy efficiency as it reduces heat loss. This, in turn, can lead to overall lower energy bills for both homeowners and tenants.
Cost Savings
By improving the energy efficiency, in turn reduces the energy consumption which leads to lower energy bills. For homes with limited or fixed incomes, this is particularly beneficial.
Property Value
Energy efficient homes with good insulation attracts potential buyers. This can raise the property value and be beneficial for homeowners who are looking to sell or rent their property.
Environmental Impact
Reducing the amount of energy needed to heat homes, insulation schemes can contribute to lower carbon emissions. This aligns with the broader goals and efforts to battle climate change.
