Air Source Heat Pump Grants

Renew Energy Ltd offer air source heat pump installation. Our team is highly trained and experienced. An air source heat pump extracts heat from the air to heat your home and hot water. Air pumps can extract heat in temperatures as little as -15 degrees and upwards.

Based in Cleveleys, we work throughout the North-West including Blackpool, Preston, Lancaster, Morecambe, Wigan, Southport & all surrounding areas.

Air source heat pumps are in a way, renewable energy technology. It takes the warmth out of the air outside, even if it is minus degrees. The heat they extract from the air is used to heat the home. Air pumps are used for a wide range of properties.

Because the air is heated by the sun, the energy that heat pumps produce is classed as renewable, even though the pump itself is powered by electricity.

What is an air source heat pump?

An air source heat pump (ASHP) is a device that moves heat from the outside air into your home during the winter to heat it and moves heat from inside your home to the outside during the summer to cool it.

Here’s a simple breakdown:

Basic Principle: Think of it like a refrigerator or an air conditioner, but one that can work in reverse. A fridge takes heat from inside the fridge and moves it outside, which is why the back of the fridge feels warm. An air source heat pump can take heat from the outside air (even when it’s cold outside) and move it inside to warm your house.

How it Works: An ASHP uses a refrigerant – a special fluid that can easily change between a liquid and a gas. When this fluid absorbs heat, it turns into a gas. When it releases heat, it turns back into a liquid.

    • Heating: In winter, the ASHP takes in cold air from outside, the refrigerant absorbs the heat from this air, and then the warmed refrigerant is compressed, which makes it even hotter. This heat is then transferred into your home.
    • Cooling: In summer, the process is reversed. The ASHP takes in warm air from your home, the refrigerant releases its heat to the outside, and then the cooled refrigerant is expanded, which makes it even colder. This coolness is then transferred back into your home.

Efficiency: ASHPs are quite efficient. They can produce more heat than the electrical energy they consume, making them more efficient than traditional electric heaters. This is because they’re moving existing heat rather than generating it.

Climate Suitability: They work best in moderate climates where extreme cold temperatures are not frequent. However, newer models are getting better at working in colder climates as well.

An air source heat pump is like a magical box that can pull heat out of seemingly cold air in the winter and push heat out of your home in the summer, keeping you comfortable year-round!

Do Air Source Heat Pumps Work With Radiators?

While an air source heat pump can be used with your existing radiators, they are far more efficient with underfloor or warm air heating systems. This is because radiators will not get as hot as traditional heating such as gas or oil.

Air source heat pumps operate at a lower temperature than gas boilers, so it’s essential to ensure your home is appropriately insulated. You can do this with loft insulation, cavity wall insulation, underfloor insulation & room-in-roof insulation.

Is an air source heat pump expensive to run?

The cost to run an air source heat pump depends generally on how much it is used and the energy efficiency of your home.

ASHP are extremely energy efficient, with some makes & models able to run at 300% efficiency. This means that for every 1kwh of electricity, they generate up to three times as much heat.

Although this is extremely efficient, the cost of electricity is an important fact to consider. The current rate for electric* is 34.34p per kwh. In comparison, the price of gas is 6.9p per kwh.

So, although ASHP is far more efficient than gas boilers in terms of their input-to-output, the significant difference in the cost of gas and electric can currently cause an ASHP to be slightly more expensive to run.

Do Air Source Heat Pumps Work In Winter?

Yes, air source heat pumps (ASHPs) do work in winter. They are designed to extract heat from the outside air, even when it’s cold. Here’s a deeper look:
Even when the air feels cold to us, there’s still some heat energy present. ASHPs are engineered to capture this ambient heat. The refrigerant inside the heat pump absorbs this heat, and through a cycle of compression and condensation, the heat is intensified and then transferred to the inside of your home.

As the outside temperature drops, the efficiency of most ASHPs decreases, simply because there’s less heat in the air to extract. However, many modern ASHPs are designed to operate efficiently at very low temperatures. Some newer models can function effectively in temperatures as low as -20°F (-29°C) or even lower.
